The first liver transplant in north of Iran has been successfully performed in a hospital affiliated to Guilan University of Medical Sciences in Guilan Province.

According to the news agency of Guilan University of Medical Sciences (GUMS), the transplant was performed on a 34-year-old patient with alcoholic liver disease at Razi Hospital in the provincial capital city of Rasht.

The surgery team of the hospital performed the transplant after the liver of a 26-year-old brain-dead patient was donated.

Professor Yousefzadeh Chabok, the chancellor of GUMS, said that the successful organ transplant is in line with the strategic plan of the university.

The chancellor pointed out that the liver transplant can promise the realization of other valuable programs in the field of health in this province, adding that such an operation has been the result of many years of experience in the university.

He further noted that the operation was performed “in cooperation with Shiraz University of Medical Sciences which is the largest liver transplant center in the world.”

He also hoped that soon in the future other organ transplants such as bone marrow transplant, heart transplant and lung transplant can be performed in the province.
